There are a lot of spots to snorkel in Bali. From the famous destinations for diving and snorkeling like Amed, Tulamben, Pemuteran/Menjangan, and Padang Bay. However, those areas are also crowded with tourists. It can be overwhelming and not enjoyable. If you want a less crowded area of pristine beach with a cave, Green Bowl Beach is your go-to place. This hidden gem is located in the south of Bali.

How to get to Green Bowl Beach

You need either a car or a bike to get to Green Bowl Beach. There’s no public transportation. You can also get a Gojek/Grab, but only until the entrance. You will need to pay an entrance fee, so prepare a cash of Rp10.000-20.000/person. You can park your vehicle in the parking area. You’re not quite there yet though. You still need to go down the stairs for about 2-5 minutes to get to the beach. I gotta tell you, if you’re not physically fit, the way back up can be grueling. Don’t forget to stretch your legs.

Once you reach the bottom, take a right turn. You will find a big cave there and voila, you have arrive in Green Bowl Beach.

What to do in Green Bowl Beach

Just like the title of this post, you can snorkel! The reason why I like to snorkel here is that there aren’t a lot of people. If you’ve been to a snorkeling destination with a lot of tourists, you know what I mean. It can be annoying for the wildlife and distress them. Usually, when I snorkel early in the morning, it’s just the fish and me. You gotta bring your own gear though, because there’s no rental place here. You also need to learn how to read the current, because it can drag you far from the shore. The depth is probably max 2-3 meters, depending on the tide and moon phase. Based on my experience, it’s best to snorkel in the morning right after sunrise.

There are two caves in Green Bow Beach. The first one is a big cave where you can sit and spread your beach towel. The other one, you will see several statues with offerings. Please respect the local culture and religion and don’t do anything disrespecting the statues or in the second cave.

Green Bowl Beach

You will see a lot of surfers here, so it’s definitely one of the things you can do here. But if you’re a beginner, don’t even try to surf here. The waves will eat you up. Just like snorkeling, if you want to surf here, you gotta bring your own board.

In the early morning, you will see a lot of people fishing too.

Tips when visiting Green Bowl Beach:

  • Prepare some cash, maybe around Rp50.000-100.000
  • There’s no proper toilet
  • Bring your own towel or beach towel
  • Bring your own snorkel, because there’s no rental place here
  • There will be a very “determined” lady, selling coconut and bracelets, to you. She will be so “determined” to the point it’s like forcing you. Just ignore it. It happened to me a lot, to the point that it’s making your time at the beach not great. Even if you bought something, she will force you to buy other things.
