If you’ve been following my journey in this blog, you know that I studied in Switzerland. I lived in Montreux and Bulle, the French part of Switzerland. Three of the best things about Switzerland are their cheese, scenery, and outdoor life. I used to live in Bulle, and it’s really close to Gruyères. You can walk from Bulle to Gruyères. What to do in Gruyères? You eat cheese fondue and raclette! I have never seen a decent place in Indonesia that replicates the Swiss chalet exactly like in Switzerland. Until I went to Swiss Chalet & Grill in Ubud.

After a day of motor touring from Denpasar to Bedugul, I know I need to have my early dinner here. At the time, I was doing Easter fasting, and I wanted my only meal of the day to be great. And Swiss Chalet definitely didn’t disappoint.

I was very surprised by how similar the interior of the restaurant was to the chalets in Switzerland. The only difference is definitely the humid weather and how close the noisy street is to the entrance of the restaurant. Swiss chalet typically scattered in the valleys. After mesmerizing myself with the interior, I ordered the food. Sadly, cheese fondue is available for a minimum of 2 people. This is probably one of the things I hate about traveling solo. Sometimes restaurants don’t welcome solo diner. But the waiter was kind enough to give me an alternative. Another classic Swiss dish is raclette. Believe it or not, my roommates and I used to have a raclette grill and it was awesome. She suggested getting the raclette but they cannot grill it in front of me. They gotta do it in the kitchen. I also ordered beef tartare and key lime pie.

Beef Tartare

I love beef tartare so much, but I’m not willing to risk my health in Indonesia. Beef tartare is basically just raw, ground beef with seasoning. Whenever I want to eat this dish, I have to be aware of the restaurant. Whether it’s clean or not. This is just an assumption but seeing how much I enjoyed the dish, I know it’s a clean restaurant. I didn’t smell any weird scent that usually come off from not-so-good beef. This is definitely a highly recommended dish.

Raclette

I gotta say, this is disappointing. Maybe because the ratio of potatoes and the raclette is off. Or maybe because I should’ve got some additional protein. But the point of cheese raclette and fondue is so you can always have it freshly melt cheese in front of you. So if you’re a solo diner like me, either get 2 portions so they can serve you the fondue, or just bring someone with you.

Key Lime Pie

As someone who lived in the Keys, Florida. This is definitely underwhelming. The pie is too thin. The meringue topping is just too little! It has to be a good balance between the crust, filling and topping. It was sad because I love key lime pie and if they nailed this, it will be a really good meal. I recommend that you order something else, maybe something with chocolate.

Overall, it was a great meal. The waiters were nice and very accommodating. I came at an odd hour, just before dinner time, so there aren’t many people. The restaurant interior is very cozy and if you want to know what a Swiss chalet looks like, this is it. If I have to compare the price with the one in Switzerland, this is definitely much cheaper. Especially with the current currency exchange, I studied in Switzerland, and the exchange rate was Rp14.000-16.000! Now it’s Rp21.459 (as of 14 March 2026).

Some other food on their menu I will probably try:

  • Raclette burger
  • Chicken “Zurichoise”
  • Swiss Cheese Spätzle
  • Slow-cooked beef in red wine
  • Apple strudel with vanilla sauce and cream

I will definitely come back if I’m craving more Swiss food. Literally next to this restaurant is their little market where they sell ingredients like cheese, chocolate, baked goods and souvenirs.

See you in my next post!
